The Beacon...a small, unexpecting venue in New
York City, was quietly and hopefully looking to
the year 2000. Little did it's staff realize
that the sky was about to open and crack thunder!!
The name of the sky was Meat Loaf and the
thunder.....Storytellers! Between December
27th and January 1st, 4 concerts were slated
by a man who some people thought was a "has
been"...a man, middle-aged, with short hair...
who would sing a few songs and give them a
quiet, easy New Years Eve week. Where they
right?
Far from right, Meat came on with a vengeance
and rocked the house! Many fans waited hours
to get their tickets and the excitement of
the day finally arriving - the day Meat rocked
their world - had arrived!
Here are their stories.....

Denise's story:
I am soo happy to be home, Just so you all know, I got back from The Beacon (at
home ) at 2:45 am and then stayed up the rest of the night because we were
leaving at 5:00 am. to go to Myrtle Beach, SC for New Years.
That was quite interesting; no sleep. Needless to say
I was on a Meat high. Yes I did get on stage, and I also got to ask a
question. I asked the ques. about the superstitions....if Meat had any before he goes on stage, He said he wore the same socks since BOOH( he said he didn't really have
any, but went on about stretching while watching the clock before every
show) but before this I was talking real slow for some reason, I don't
know and he said I sounded like Eore from Winnie the Pooh, I was so embarrassed,
I don't why I started out like that! But when I proceeded with the ques. I
spoke faster, anyway. I was the first name he called from the 2nd batch
of cards for You took the words, I was up right quick too!
It was great to be up there except that drunk personal injury lawyer kept
shoving everyone around! He was real annoying! And someone other guy was dancing like a
nut right in front of everyone and Meat was looking at him real strange-like!
When we were leaving the stage I said hi to Patti & Pearl sitting there,
they smiled and said HI, it was really cool up there, I was checking
everyone out on the stage.
I got to the theater about an hour before the show and we walked around a
while because I was looking for the people with the questionaire cards, my
friend Joey who went with me saw this group of people (about 4 of them)
with these Meat Loaf stickers on their shirts standing by the door right by the
souveiner stand in the front part of the lobby, he said watch those people
they have cards in their hands and since I filled out a questionaire
before I knew what it looked like, so we kind of hung around them. Then 5 mins.
later the blond girl in the group came right up to us and asked us if we
would fill out a ques. for Meat Loaf we said sure, of course my heart was
beating a mile a minute and I tried not to scream out YES YES YES OF
COURSE!!!!!! So we moved over by the wall to fill them out and she came
over to us to collect them and said thanks! So you know everytime he
picked up a card, my heart was beating out of my chest hoping it would be me! And
he even pronounced my last name correctly (it is a toughie, it doesn't
sound like it looks) I was very suprised he got it right! I was in about the
17th or 18th row and I was up those steps like a shot ( I think I got up
there while he was still saying the 2nd name) I then ended up right next
to the microphone! But anyway, when I raised my hand for the ques. Meat
called on me but the goofy DJ was in the next aisle with some other chick, and I
was kind of left standing there, and Meat forgot he picked me and went on
to someone else. So this action of course caused me to repeatedly jump up
and down in the aisle with my hand waving in the air until he finally came
back our way and called on me. I think I was so mad at that DJ that I kind of
lost my thoughts and thats why I started off sounding like Eore. But it
definately made up for it when he called me up there on stage. How cool!!
But we had to leave to catch the last bus leaving Port Authority at 11:30
so right after he sang BOOH we left.
Because if I would have missed that bus my hubby would have killed me!
Also my friend got these tickets for free, so that was so great too! Also,
since we got to the theater around 6:00 we looked for a coffee shop or
bar to hang out in, so we walked across the street and we were walking
along and I look up and this guy was standing outside this vitamin store and was
smoking a cigerette he threw it on the ground and put it out with his foot
and went into the store and I'm looking at this guy and I say to Joey OH
MY GOD, that's Kas and Joe is looking and we go over to the store window and
stare in while Kasim is buying some vitamins or something, we were trying
to see what he was purchasing, it was funny I just looked up and he was
there, we should have gone in but I was too chicken! So then we ended up having
coffee in the little shop next to the theater and we went over there at
7:00, and stood in line to get in; it was mighty cold in the city that
nite, 30 degrees!!!! I did take a whole roll of film during the show. See
below for the set list of this show. Meat did do "For Crying Out Lout"
which is my fav. and he sounded great! We only missed the encore song
because we had to leave and it was"All Revved UP" Meat and the band put on
a great show as usual and this being my 3rd show this tour I have to say
Meat sounded the best that night. Also, this NYC crowd was a bit crazier
than the other two, Well Philly was kind of nuts also. But this crowd got up
and danced and sang to "Paradise" & BOOH. The whole theater was on their
feet and singing and clapping it was really fun!! 3rd concert was a charm
because I finally got up there on stage!!!! That was the best part!!!

you'll get!! If you have, kick back and re~live the
memories here!!
Liz's story:
There is so much to say about New Year’s Eve, at the Beacon, I can’t
possibly cover it all so I’ll give you the highlights in my mind’s
eye. Meat, of course, was our provocative host for the entire four
hours - lasting until, approximately, 12:30 am 010100, and I can call
him Meat, now, since … "… if such and such ‘a… shot’ can call him Meat,
we can too…"… he ardently informed us. I always referred to Meat as
Meatloaf in the 20th century, but now it’s Meat, and I feel hip!
Since I originate from Paterson, New Jersey, I had the good fortune of
catching Meatloaf on the other side of the tracks, so to speak, at
Bergen Community College, Paramus New Jersey in 1975 (circa 1975). I
had not seen Meatloaf, between 1976 and, but the memory of Meat, and
Ms. Foley performing "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" with such force
and energy has not faded, in my visual memory, to this day. I see
them, as clearly, as if it were 1975! During the BCC concert,
occasionally, Meat would sit in a chair, his white shirt tussled beyond
tussle, visibly exhausted, but then, seemingly, only to gather what
would be even greater energy to dazzle the receptive and enamored young
crowd. It was one of the best and most memorable concerts at the
College!
The night of the impending new millennium was no less the experience of
1975. All of us received two great souveniers, as we entered the door
to commemorate the evening, and New Year’s: A brass ticket keychain
(PIC 023) and a VIP Meatloaf picture tag (I can send PIC if wish Vee).
And note, the staff at the Beacon were relaxed and pleasant, and our
crowd turned out to be one of the best concert crowds I’ve been in the
company of in 1999.
Meatloaf was introduced by Maria Milito, of WAXQ 104.3 NYC,
approximately, 8:30 PM. Meat came out in all black, and proceeded to
tell us the rules: No requests, and what our response to requests
would be, and …"I am going to do what I want to do"!! Meat cautioned.
I’ll leave the explicative instruction to your imagination. There were
a few requests, verrrrrry few requests, and **** *** resounded in the
theater right on cue! One request turned out to be an exchange, but
only after Meat chided the fan a bit in fun: A present for a kiss.
Meat accepted the present, and to the female fan’s delight, she received
her kiss, as well as her friend receiving a kiss to her own delight in
sharing the experience. Also, Meat asked the audience to choose a gray,
maroon or blue silky shirt for the new year. Everyone choose the blue,
but no time to change, Meat was still in all black at midnight, and no
one gave it a thought since everything came about so spontaneously.
With the addition of "I’ll Do Anything for Love but I Won’t Do That"
since 1975, and with the performance of what I call, one of the most
articulate commentaries, if not the only social commentary on sexual
mores, Patty battled courageously with Meat no less comparable to Ms.
Foley’s performance in 1975 of "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" (PIC
007/008). I cannot say there was one silent voice in the audience -
everyone, but everyone knew the words to "Paradise…" by heart. It was
awesome as USUAL!!
Meat, the storyteller, instructed us in what ‘that’ meant in "I’ll Do
Anything for Love but I Won’t Do That". I’m still a little confused,
but I think it’s not to cheat. He, also, told us Jim Steinman and
himself, worked on Bat Out of Hell, at the hotel, right across the
street from the Beacon; and credited the NY radio stations, and
mentioning a Jersey gig - Morristown, as well as his fans for making his
dream possible. He told us of his request to Jim, to come up with
something like Elvis’ "…I need you, I want you…", and Jim ‘cliched’,
..."but, I’ll never love you, two out of three ain’t bad".... Also,
"For Cryin’ Out Loud", we discovered, is one of Meat’s faves, his fave
of faves, in fact, and "…if anyone would argue with me for an hour, I
would convince them it is the greatest love song ever written…" Meat
bellowed. He performed "Cryin’ Out Loud" (PIC 001) with his special
passion we all know and love. In addition, Meat announced, off the
cuff, during the evening, they’re working on Bat Out of Hell III. I
like surprises!
Towards the end of the middle of the evening, Meat pulled tickets from a
hat for bottles of champagne, for two fully loaded shopping bags of
everything sold at the concession, and the creme de la creme, a Bat Out
of Hell guitar (PIC 013). The young man, with ticket in hand, really
wished for it, but earlier in the evening, Meat informed us he has been
sued more than anyone else in the business (he didn’t say why, and no
one asked), but he asked all who were sued to stand, those who won to
sit, and asked the remaining why they lost the suit. Coincidentally, a
doctor, one of the individuals losing a law suit won the guitar toa
young man’s deep disappointment. In the group of those who had been
sued were, also, lawyers who stood up when Meat asked who has been sued,
but Meat told them to sit down, but added **** ***, all in fun, and the
crowd cheered, gleefully, as Meat gave a big smile, and the lawyers,
also, couldn’t help but grin as they, obediently, sat in their seats,
upon command.
The night was winding down or up or both when the clock began to tick
within the five minute mark to midnight, and the band performed Prince’s
1999 with Patty adorning herself in a top hat and 2000 glasses (PIC
015 ), and may I add, at this time, great guitars, keyboards, and
drums as well as Meat’s older daughter’s delightful voice accompanied by
her younger sister. Meat, in fact, stated, … "I have worked with these
musicians for seven years, and they are the best I’ve ever had"…
Confetti and balloons galore dropped from the ceiling a little after
midnight
(PIC 021/022 ), and some fans, one could see clearly, felt wonderful
being so close to Meat, and others admired him from their seats (PIC
020). Through the bevy of fans, Meat gave his wife a tender kiss and
hug - aww…, and she took pictures herself, and she absolutely seemed to
be enjoying the evening with the rest of us, Meat, and their two
children when the clock struck midnight. Meat bid us goodnight around
12:30 am, and raised his guitar as he left the stage.
When I left, the Marquis was already dated Jan. 1 (PIC Marquis ), and,
yes, time does fly, doesn’t it. A nice little niche to bring in the New
Year, I thought to myself - The Meatloaf Storyteller’s Tour, and Meat
never fails to reflect the dimension of love at its most fundamental
level - passion!
A safe, happy, and healthy Meatloafennium to all!
