When Meat Loaf went to the UK to tour in 1994, he arrived
in Birmingham to play at the NEC, where the local TV
station was doing a competition for a 'Meat Loaf' Soundalike. The winner was 5 year old Mark Taylor.
Dressed in full Meat Loaf attire - frilly white shirt, black waistcoat, black trousers and the Meat Loaf signature red scarf, Mark went on stage and with the whole band performed a stunning version of "I'd Do Anything For Love." Kasim Sulton, who had just started working with Meat again at the time, struck up a friendship with Mark and since that time has remained in contact with him and whenever the band comes into town, Kasim invites Mark to the show. In Sheffield last Saturday night (May 1st) Kasim invited Mark to the show again (Mark is now 10 years old) but this time he wanted to do something really special for Mark. Kasim said that if Mark wanted to, he could sit on the side of the stage and watch the show alongside the band. However, in order for him to do this,Kasim made a special deal with him. Mark has a 6 year old sister named Rachel, and in true sibling style, he spends his time antagonising her, hogging the video game and generally being a true pest! Kasim told Mark that if he wanted to watch the show from this special place, he would have to do the following: For one whole day he had to..
Kasim spoke to Markís mum to make sure he had kept to his part of the bargain, which he did, begrudgingly, so not only did Mark spend the whole show on the stage, but he also went backstage before the show, met the crew and had a cup of tea with Kasim. This little look into the heart of Kasim provided by Eden/Virgin Net! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

How do we even begin to talk about Kasim??? I guess, at the beginning!
Kasim began his professional career playing as a teen in local bands on Staten Island. In the mid 1970's, Kasim got his first big break playing piano with artist Cherry Vanilla. After a year working on his keyboard technique with her, he auditioned and earned a spot as bass guitarist and vocalist for the progressive rock band Utopia. Kasim became the most dominant force in the band. By the time "Oblivion" and "POV" were released in 1985, Kasim's position as bass guitarist and his role as a strong lead vocalist were forged in steel. Kasim began working with Meat Loaf as bass player on "Bat Out of Hell", which featured Kasim's bass playing on nearly every song. At the time, he was already a member of the band, "Utopia".

He remained a member of Utopia from 1976-1986 as their bass player/vocalist and wrote their only top 20 hit "Set Me Free". After Utopia stopped, Kasim joined Joan Jett, drummer Tommy Price, and released "Lights On". He joined Joan Jett's band, "The Blackhearts" in 1988, and performed on three albums, including the platinum, "Up Your Alley". He was a member of The Blackhearts until 1990. Before rejoining Utopia in 1992 during a brief reunion in Japan, Kasim toured with Patti Smyth, Cheap Trick, and Hall and Oates. Kasim released a solo album in 1982. He has also been part of productions by Shawn Cassidy, Todd Rundgren, Jim Steinman, the Indigo Girls, Patti Smith, Tom Robinson, Ronnie Spector, Johnnny Hates Jazz, and Celine Dion. Kasim made a brief cameo appearance in the movie "Roadie",(see if you can spot him!!!) and can be found on the movie's soundtrack. He also can be found on Meat's "Bat Out of Hell 2", "Welcome to the Neighborhood", and "Live Around the World" albums, and was part of Meat's last two tours. He also was in charge of arranging the background vocals on "Welcome to the Neighborhood". Kasim is currently hard at work on his second solo album, writing and recording the songs for it. Kasim just finished a world tour playing bass guitar for Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, and also assisted Jon Bon Jovi in an "unscheduled" performance at an anniversary bash for Bon Jovi's FAN COMMUNITY right before rejoining Meat and the band as the newly appointed bass player and musical director. |
